Enjoying delicious, nutritious food is one of life’s simple pleasures - for health, community and pure enjoyment! From a sustainability perspective, reducing food waste (most of which comes from households, not grocery stores) has a huge impact on our climate. This is because, when we waste food, we also waste all the energy & water it took to grow, harvest, transport, package & store/sell it.

Research shows that food waste is responsible for 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions (that’s currently more than the entire aviation industry). According to the book, Project Drawdown, more than a third of the food we raise or prepare never even makes it our grocery stores and, “when ranked with countries, food waste would be the 3rd largest emitter of greenhouse gases globally”. That’s just crazy to think about especially when coupled with food insecurity, which continues to be a horribly unacceptable issue for millions of people.

From proactive meal planning to embracing imperfect fruits/vegetables, and consuming way less meat, especially beef - all efforts to reduce our food waste is impactful. And, when we do have waste, go to our recommendations to learn how/why it’s so important to separate it from your trash.
